Guru Yoga Practice for Sangye Nyenpa Rinpoche

I was surprised to see that there is no specific guru yoga written for the Sangye Nyenpa lineage. However, the Four-Session Guru Yoga ( dpal karma pa chen po la brten pa’i thun bzhi’i bla ma’i rnal ‘byor dmigs khrid dang bcas pa/) written by the 8th Karmapa Mikyo Dorje, a devoted student of the 1st Sangye Nyenpa, contains three specific references to Sangye Nyenpa (of which a complete translation of the text, together with audio of HH 17th Karmapa reciting it, can be downloaded from Dharmaebooks here).

When I recently requested Sangye Nyenpa Rinpoche to write a guru yoga for the Sangye Nyenpas, Rinpoche told me that according to his root lama Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche, a lama can only write a guru yoga prayer for themselves if they have completed the outer, inner and secret practices of the three roots (rtsa ba gsum).  I also requested the 12th Tai Situpa to write one for the Sangye Nyenpas when I was recently at Sherab Ling.

In any case, followers can practice the 8th Karmapa guru yoga, or any guru yoga they have instruction on, visualising their root lama in the form of Vajradhara.  I have extracted the specific passages from from the 8th Karmapa guru yoga that supplicate Sangye Nyenpa below. It has the additional blessing of being one of the guru yoga daily practises of the current 10th Sangye Nyenpa Rinpoche.

Dharma lord, may I be like you.

Guru, may I be like you.

Protector of beings, may I be like you.

Sole omniscient father,

Siddha Sangye Nyenpa,

Gyalwang Mikyö Dorje,

If I don’t supplicate you then who will supplicate?

If you don’t behold with compassion then who will?

I supplicate you; grant your blessings.
